Global News Last Week: 20th to 26th Mar, 2011

In this blog post we would attempt to familiarize ourselves with the location of the countries all over the globe while sampling the current events there.

6. Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, lost a no-confidence vote and had to step down
7. One million people flee Abidjan, the capital city of Ivory Coast over armed clashes

Let us look at each of the Global News items that occurred last week
1. Kenya invades Somalia to help Somalian Govt fight insurgent groups who are seen to be a threat to the entire region

Kenya is in Eastern part of Africa. Somalia is in the Horn of Africa. They are neighbours. Kenya is to the South of Somalia. Both these countries have their eastern coastline with the Indian Ocean.

2. Presidential Elections in Haiti

Haiti is an island country near the eastern coast of US-Mexico. Haiti shares an island with another country called Dominican Republic. This island is next to the island of Cuba.

3. Google alleges China of blocking Gmail

China dominates the centre of Asia and is above India and South East Asia. China is the largest country in the world in terms of population

4. Portuguese PM, Jose Socrates resigns over Financial Crisis

Portugal is an European country and is the Westernmost country on the mainland. It is completely enclosed by Spain in the East and has a Western Coast with Atlantic Ocean

5. Former Ukrainian President, Leonid Kuchma, indicted for murder

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe and has Russia in the East and Black Sea to its South. So, Black Sea has Ukraine to its North and Turkey to its South.

6. Canadian PM, Stephen Harper, lost a no-confidence vote and had to step down but in the elections likely in May, he is expected to win back

Canada is the northernmost country in North America and borders the Arctic Ocean i.e. the North Pole and there are lot of Eskimos who stay in this country.

7. One million people flee Abidjan, Ivory Coast over armed clashes between the forces of incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo and Internationally recognized President Alassane Outtara, with thousands of people moving into neighbouring Liberia

Ivory Coast is in Western Africa. Its southern shores are washed by the Gulf of Guinea and it has Liberia and Ghana on both sides
